INT. – HOSPITAL – DAY
A woman in her 30’s is running through hospital corridors to find her husband, she has been directed by the receptionist. She then sees her husband through a window, and pushes the door and walks in slowly.
The woman is sitting next to a comatose man in his 40’s. She starts talking to him in a tearful voice. However it seems as she is talking more to herself then him.
Woman
Can’t believe this happened, I really can’t. you always hear about people getting beat up badly for no good reasons but you? I mean you look like someone who would do the beating not getting it *nervous laugh*. Things really are weird nowadays but hey don’t mean life isn’t worth living does it?
Woman quietly sniffs.
Woman
This is my entire fault isn’t it? Because I just kept pushing you to work more so I can spent my day shopping and buying meaning less possessions which no one ever really needs. It’s my entire fault for being such a selfish cow and that’s why you had to go get more shifts at that wretched nightclub and get beaten up. I’m so… *starts sobbing* I’m so sorry Steve I really am. I promise to be more considerate when you wake up, please wake up.
EXT. – CLUB – NIGHT TIME
Scene change. The man is standing in front of a club by the doors as a bouncer. Three northern men are approaching the club. They seem very drunk and are singing and talking complete gibberish.
They approach the security guard and start talking to him very drunk.
One of the northern men
Aalrite mate, what youu doing out here in the cold when there is a party going on in there.
The man does not reply.
Another northern men
Aye, are you deaf? He asked you a question man.
Security Guard
Sorry but I’m not going to communicate with you, while your using that tone.
Northern man
O serious you need to get a fucking life mate.
Security Guard

Northern man

Another northern man
Means your not important enough piss head.
Other northern man
Is that true? You think I’m not good enough to talk to you?
The security guard doesn’t reply.
Northern man
Oi, I’m talking to you!
INT. – HOSPITAL – DAY
There is a silent atmosphere where the man is laying, his wife is beside him and all we can hear is the life support machine. As the noises of the machine get louder and louder till there is nothing else to hear a doctor suddenly enters the room. The woman jumps up and starts asking questions.
Woman
How is he? Is he getting better? How long is he going to stay like this?
Doctor
We are still very uncertain about his condition. He has received a very a bad hit to his brain making it unpredictable what will happen next.
Woman (with a raised voice)
How do you mean it’s unpredictable? I thought suppose to be good at this stuff?
Doctor
With injuries to the brain it will be more complicated and we still don’t have enough information…
Woman (furiously cuts in)
But you have done all your stupid scans and tests! Surely you should be able to tell what it’s wrong with him!
Doctor
Please Mrs Stone, you will have to come down. I know this must be a difficult time for…
Woman
Don’t tell me that you have any idea how I feel! This isn’t some kind of film where you can just say things like this and I will be just fine like that!
Doctor
I’m sorry…
Woman
“I’m sorry” isn’t going to do it. Just tell me do you at least know if he’s going to live or die?
Doctor
We really are not sure about his condition…
Woman
Oh just go. Please leave me alone!

Northern man (mimicking his voice)
“I’m sorry but you are far too drunk for my liking”, jeez to you always try to sound that posh?
The security guard is ignoring them again.
Northern man
Christ he is flipping ignoring us again. He really does think he is too good for us.
Second Northern man
And he also doesn’t want us into his club. He probably thinks northern men aren’t good enough for this area.
A second security guy comes over to inspect what’s going on.
Second security guard
Is there a problem here?
Northern man
Yeah, your dodgy looking friend is making one. He thinks your poxy-looking club is too good for us.
First Security guard
I’m going to have to ask you to leave now.
Northern man
See what I mean? He is still treating us like northern trash we should have him done for racism.
Security guard
This has nothing to do with your background if you are that drunk then we can’t let you in.
Northern man
Why? You think we going to fall over or hurt ourselves.
Second security guard
There is a risk of you hurting others.
Northern man

Doctor

Nurse

Woman
How am I suppose to be strong if I don’t even know what’s going to happen to him your not even sure if he’ll ever wake up.
Nurse
That’s why you have to be strong, I know this will probably be the hardest thing you’ll ever have to do but you will have to be patient and wait for him to wake up.

Supervisor
Attention all security units! A group of men are on they way here to start a fight. Tell all visitors outside to make they way home and to be careful. After that we will lock the doors.
After hearing the message he starts telling the people outside to leave. One of them is insisting of wanting to stay outside and to finish his cigarette and after going back in.
Security guard
You really have to leave now it will get very dangerous here in a minute.
Man
Alright, alright come down am only finishing the fag then I’ll be back inside.
Security guard
No you either need to leave right now or if you have a friend or so who is inside, go back in the club and stay there for another hour.
Man
Look am not sure what kind of ‘evil men’ are coming but I think I can handle a few thugs alright.
Security guard
Look this isn’t a joke OK this is serious. There seems to be a very large group of men coming over in a second and not just some ‘few thugs’ and you really need to leave if you don’t want to… (Interrupted)
Northern man
Oi, look who is there its Mister V.I.P
A large group of scary looking men have arrived at the club. The man with the cigarette starts walking away by the sight of them. He tries to shout something in his walkie-talkie but one of the men slaps it out of his hand. The security guard then tries to run back in to the club however the doors are locked. The men are closing in on him having him completely surrounded and despite his banging and shouting the door doesn’t open. The men start to laugh.
Northern men
OI, oi looks like mister V.I.P isn’t that important after all. Stop banging at the door and start fighting like men.
One of the men has grabbed him and punched him in his face. They all start kicking and punching him while he is collapsed on the floor trying to shield himself as best as he can.

Titles with pictures of the real life security guard when he was in the hospital.
When writing the script the film that inspired me the most was ‘Requiem for a Dream’ by Darren Aronovski. This was because the way they approached a crisis and communicated it to the audience I regard as very effective and we have adapted some of the style and filming techniques used into our own film.

Before we first started anything we have been given a stimulus on which we were supposed to try and base our film on. This stimulus was crisis. We came up with a list of thoughts and feelings we associated with it. I came up with a range of different things, the first thing being midlife crisis, e.g. a man that has reached a certain stage of his life and realizing he hasn’t achieved everything he wanted to achieve in life and that it is now too late. Another response was identity crisis where the person is uncertain who he is and wants to discover him. Family crisis was another one and food crisis but also less associated things like ‘Infinite crisis’, which is a storyline in the DC universe came to mind. The feelings I associated with crisis were feelings of not in control of things, lost, pain, danger and anxiety.
We then tried coming up with stories based on them themes we came up with. Me and my coursework partner started first with an idea based on the terrorism crisis which Britain still fears, and came up with a man being attacked and hold hostage by terrorists, however exploring he’s life and building up a relationship between the person and the viewer who can connect with that person due to the fact that everyone has this fear now. We then decided to explore maybe a person’s relationship with his older brother to whom he looked up to all his life and who’s been injured in the war and is now a cripple and therefore a mere shadow of the hero self. We found this idea very intriguing because it allowed us to explore the inner conflict of someone trying to be like a person who isn’t that person anymore and has to maybe think about the possibility that his hero was following a path of doom. However even though the idea seemed very promising we decided to go with a story, which was based on true events that had happened to a real person. This was because it was more personal and therefore we could put in more emotion into it then a story, which we just made up. This story is about a woman who had to spent 48 hours next to her comatose husband without knowing whether he would ever wake up or not. We also decided to add in flashbacks showing how he has ended up in this stage and all the information we received is based on what the real life person has told us.
When writing the script the film that inspired me the most was ‘Requiem for a Dream’ by Darren Aronovski. This was because the way they approached a crisis and communicated it to the audience I regard as very effective and we have adapted some of the style and filming techniques used into our own film.
